Curia is without doubt one of the most ancient Portuguese Hydrological Resorts located, located in the centre of the Bairrada region.
When the region was occupied by the Romans, it was know as AQUAE CURIVA.
Curia is a recent village, it is only a bit over a century and the first document reference to its name appears in 1863.
There are two explanations as of the origin of its name:
- One explanation is that Dr. Luis Navega, The doctor who after 1900 began exploiting the waters and was the clinical director of the thermal resort, said that Curia derived from "Curiva" or places where linen was tanned. Linen was a regional culture and the abundance of water, that irrigated the plain facilitated the tanning. This explanation is etymologically difficult to accept.
- The other explanation, made by the philosopher Dr. Joaquim da Silveira, is that the word may derive from the feminine of an Arab name. The surname CUN was used among mozarabs of Toledo, in the XII century, and being represented in Portugal by the toponym of CORIM and the feminine would be CURIA. This explanation also raises doubts.
Its waters and their curative power, essentially for skin and rheumatic diseases were known by the habitants of the neighbouring villages that bathed there.
One of the French engineers that helped build the northern railway had a disease that showed wounds that appeared to be icurable, but that the Curia waters healed. It was this event and many others that began to be known all over the world and introduced Curia and its famous waters.
Curia is a beautiful place, green and calm. Ones health is carefully preserved and recovered.
The spa offers a traditional resort allied to comfort and modern technology, which is used in the new building, finished in 1993.
Its mineral - medicinal water has a calcium and magnesium sulphide nature and are especially recommended for the treatment of metabolic-endocrinous diseases, calculus and urinary infections, arterial hypertension, rheumatic and muscle-skeletal diseases.
